The Maverick Money Archetype: Why Playing It Safe Won’t Build Your Wealth

The Maverick: Risk Is My Currency

For Realz: The Maverick isn’t just an archetype for me. It’s my primary money DNA. Where others crave safety and certainty, my Maverick thrives on risk, reinvention, and rebellion. She’s unconventional, restless, and allergic to the word “safe.”

And she has been running the show in my money life for as long as I can remember.

When My Maverick First Showed Up

At 22, I boarded my first-ever big plane and flew across-the-pond to London, England on a living and working program while in college. I didn’t know a soul. I shared a flat with strangers, traveled across Europe, and proved to myself that risk opens doors safety never will. That summer changed everything.

A few years later, my Maverick pushed me to quit my “safe” government-contractor design job in Virginia and leap into entrepreneurship through a multi-level marketing company. It was bold. It was risky. And it was a spectacular crash-and-burn that ended in bankruptcy at 26, on the same day my car was repossessed.

Lesson learned? My Maverick leaps, but my Accumulator (my secondary archetype) is the one who quietly rebuilds. She helped me budget through Chapter 13 bankruptcy, pay attention to the details, and slowly climb back onto solid ground.

The Big Bold Reinvention

Right before my 40th birthday, my Maverick called again. I sold my condo in Austin, Tx, packed everything into storage, loaded up my pup Kleo Lee, and drove across the country to Asheville, NC. I had no job waiting, no safety net, no real plan. Just a gut feeling that I needed a new life.

My friends thought I’d lost it. But deep down, I knew this was right. And it was. Within a few years, I had built a career with a nonprofit, bought a home close to downtown, and felt more grounded than ever.

That’s Maverick energy at work: jump first, figure it out on the way down.

Maverick as a Superpower

Here’s the thing: once I decide something, there’s no turning back. I’ll risk what others won’t. I’ll try, fail, and try again. Entrepreneurship requires that kind of grit, and I wouldn’t have lasted as a coach without it.

The Maverick superpower isn’t recklessness. It’s courage, creativity, and resilience.

When Maverick Meets Accumulator

The truth is, I wouldn’t have survived my Maverick risks without my Accumulator riding shotgun.

  • Maverick says: “Let’s leap.”

  • Accumulator says: “Fine, but let’s pack the parachute.”

They tag-team my life. Maverick helped me start businesses, move across the country, and trust myself. Accumulator kept me safe enough to land through budgets, rebuilding, and watching the numbers while I chased big dreams.

The Shadow Side

Of course, being a Maverick isn’t always glamorous.

  • I’ve jumped into opportunities without training.

  • I’ve overspent and over-trusted my gut.

  • I’ve declared bankruptcy because I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

Without balance, Maverick energy can burn everything down. But with Accumulator’s steady hand, I’ve learned to channel risk into growth instead of chaos.

Famous Mavericks in the Wild

Think Sara Blakely, who built Spanx by trusting her intuition when no one else believed.
Or Lady Gaga, who has reinvented herself again and again, taking bold risks in music, fashion, and business.

Mavericks disrupt. They don’t just play the game. They change the rules.

How to Harness Your Maverick Energy

Strengths:

  • Courage to take risks most people won’t

  • Creativity and outside-the-box thinking

  • Resilience to fail, learn, and rise again

Challenges:

  • Overspending or gambling on ideas too soon

  • Resistance to structure or rules

  • Leaping without a net

Ways to Work With It:

  • Balance bold risks with a grounding plan (hello, Accumulator energy).

  • Learn to pause before you leap and ask if it’s intuition or impulse.

  • Surround yourself with people who can both cheer you on and reality-check you.

When you do, your Maverick energy doesn’t just create chaos. It creates breakthroughs.

Why This Matters

Here’s what I know. Once you understand your archetype, both the gifts and the shadows, you stop shaming yourself for how you “should” be with money. You start seeing your wiring clearly. And from there, you can make choices that feel aligned instead of forced.
